Video Games Need a New name

There are a lot of new games being developedand many blur the lines between video games and other types of activities.

Everyone is trying to get us out- or stay in -or play. In fact, it`s a lot of fun. Peloton and Netflix, Zoom, TikTok (Amazon, Google, TikTok), Amazon, Apple, Google, TikTok, TikTok, TikTok, TikTok, Amazon and Google all try out or dig deeper into video games.

What is the deal?

Around the world, people are spending an enormous amount of time playing games on video. Established game companies and newcomers are looking for innovative digital experiences that allow for the amount of time and money.

Even though I was a avid gamerit`s a fantastic development. It feels as if we`re in the middle reinventing whata “video game” isand what online idle time could be -that is more interactive and social, perhaps, and more active doomscrolling. (Or I could be reading too much into this. Maybe it`s just be about money.)

Games can soon seem inexplicableno matter the cause. The new features available that are available on Zoom — yesyou guessed it, Zoom includes poker, trivia and mystery games. Peloton, the maker of $2,500 exercise bicycleswill soon release a game that lets users use their pedals to steer the wheel of a virtual rolling. Netflix has confirmed that it is adding video games on itsonline entertainment platform. Facebook, TikTok and Amazon along with Google are all pitching games on video to us or selling subscriptions to games. (The New York Times is going bigger into digital puzzles and gamestoo.)

Video games have become an enormous business and increased in popularity after the coronavirus outbreak. This is no surprise since companies are more interested in getting a piece. Accenture recently revealed that game have a global market share that is greater than the combined revenue from movies and music. These figures cover traditional games on consoles and smartphones, in addition to advertising within games. Video games also have a significant cultural importance, as Olympic organizers demonstrated this weekwhen they played music from games in the opening ceremony.

There`s a chance that we`ll need to change our terminology because many new digital games aren`t the same as how we normally identify and conceptualize video games, those cinematic universes of PlayStation or Xbox.

In the same way that smartphones introduced us to simple games that made use of unique features such as gyroscopes, on-the-go internet connections, many modern games blur the lines between video games as well as other kinds of social activities. Pokemon Go, Fortnite and Among Us are video games, but they are also gatherings with acquaintances, pop culture eventsas well as opportunities for political organization and more.

What`s thrilling about many of the latest game innovations is that they represent the end of a period in which smartphone and online media were often similar to what was previously available — many podcasts were similar to talk radio, Netflix was like TV and news sites on the internet were similar to newspapers.

It`s true that games don`t provide the most stimulating forms of social connectionsIt`s still as that something is happening. There`s more mushing together to arrive at innovative digital formats that emphasise interaction over the passive reading, watching or listening.

There will be more advanced gamesand more technology-based stuff. This will allow us to develop new problems for our bodies, mindsand social interactions. I find it all fascinating.
